Hotjar vs Microsoft Clarity: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Short answer: for most D2C brands, Microsoft Clarity is enough, and the money saved is better spent making your funnel data good enough to point it in the right direction.

Longer answer below, because "just use Clarity, it's free" is lazy advice and there are real reasons to choose Hotjar.

What Each One Is

Microsoft Clarity is a free behavioural analytics tool; heatmaps and session recordings, with unlimited sessions and no paid tier. There is no Clarity Pro. Everything is available to everyone at no cost, on roughly 575,000 live sites.

Hotjar, now part of Contentsquare, is a behavioural analytics suite. Heatmaps and recordings plus surveys, feedback widgets, user interviews and funnels. Free tier available, paid plans above it, on around 1.2 million live sites.

The difference is not quality of heatmaps. It is scope.

Where Clarity Genuinely Wins

Unlimited everything, free. No session caps, no month-end surprises. For a high-traffic store, a session-metered plan gets expensive fast and Clarity simply does not meter.

Better frustration diagnostics. Dead-click and error-click heatmaps are things competitors charge for, and Clarity gives them away. Error-click heatmaps in particular clicks that trigger a JavaScript error are genuinely valuable for finding broken interface elements, and Hotjar does not offer them.

Mobile app support. If you run a native app alongside your store, Clarity covers it. Hotjar does not.

Native GA4 integration. You can jump from a GA4 segment to the matching Clarity recordings. For the workflow that actually matters; funnel data first, recordings second, this is a meaningful convenience.

Where Hotjar Genuinely Wins

Surveys and feedback widgets. The real gap. Behavioural tools show you what people did. Surveys are how you find out why. Clarity has nothing in this space, so choosing it means adding a separate survey tool.

13-month retention on paid plans. More important than it sounds. More on this below.

Move maps and engagement zones. Composite click, move and scroll data in one layer. Useful for content-heavy pages where you want to know what gets read versus skipped.

Stronger privacy controls. Advanced masking and data handling options. For regulated sectors and for anyone handling sensitive data, this is not a nice-to-have.

Collaboration workflow. Sharing recordings, tagging sessions, presenting research to a team is smoother.

The Three Differences That Actually Matter

Most comparisons stop at the feature table. These three have operational consequences.

1. Retention is the real constraint

Clarity keeps recordings around 30 days. Hotjar's paid plans keep data up to 13 months.

Here is why that matters. In March you notice conversion dropped in February. You want to look at what users were doing then. With Clarity, that data is gone. You can only investigate problems you noticed within the last month.

This is a bigger practical limitation than any missing feature, and it is the one most brands discover at exactly the wrong moment. If your analysis cycle is quarterly rather than weekly, or if you need to compare behaviour across seasons, 30 days is not enough.

2. "Free" has terms attached

Microsoft reserves rights to use data collected through Clarity. That is the mechanism that makes it free.

For a general D2C store this is usually acceptable. For a brand handling sensitive customer information, or anyone in a regulated sector, it is a question for your legal team rather than your growth team.

3. Neither tool answers "why"

Both show what users did. Clarity shows it more cheaply. Hotjar adds surveys, which get closer to intent but still rely on people accurately reporting their own behaviour.

Worth holding onto when a recording seems to reveal something obvious. What you are watching is a behaviour, and your explanation for it is a hypothesis, not a finding.

The Question That Matters More Than Either Tool

Whichever you install, it only helps if you can point it at the right place.

Session recordings are only useful when filtered; to a specific page, a specific segment, a specific drop-off point. Twenty recordings from a defined segment tell you more than two hundred watched at random.

That filtering requires funnel data good enough to tell you which segment and which page. And this is where most brands are actually stuck.

If your GA4 cannot break your funnel down by device, traffic source and payment method, you cannot filter recordings to "mobile COD buyers who reached checkout and left." You can only watch recordings of everyone, spot something that looks odd, and build a hypothesis on it.

That is not research. It is browsing with a plausible narrative attached.

The honest sequence:

  1. Validate that your conversion data is accurate

  2. Find where the funnel actually leaks, segmented

  3. Then open the behavioural tool, filtered to that specific segment and page

  4. Form a hypothesis you can test

Steps one and two are where the money is. Our guide to finding the exact leak point in GA4 covers the narrowing sequence that makes step three precise.

One Consideration for Indian Brands

DPDP enforcement provisions come into force on 13 November 2026, with full compliance due May 2027.

Two implications for behavioural tools:

Session recording needs consent, and it needs masking. A recording that captures form fields containing personal or financial data is processing that data through a third-party vendor. Masking rules need configuring on any page handling sensitive input ; checkout, account creation, and for BFSI, anything touching KYC.

Recording volume will fall. Once consent is properly enforced, you record only consented sessions. Plan for the drop rather than discovering it.

Hotjar's stronger privacy controls are a genuine advantage here. Our guide to DPDP compliance for analytics covers the configuration.

The Decision

Your situation

Choose

Starting out, budget constrained

Clarity

High traffic, would hit session caps

Clarity

Need mobile app coverage

Clarity

Diagnosing broken UI elements

Clarity, for error-click maps

Need surveys in the same tool

Hotjar

Analysis cycle longer than a month

Hotjar, for retention

Regulated sector or sensitive data

Hotjar, for privacy controls

Presenting research to a team regularly

Hotjar

Already paying for Hotjar and using surveys

Keep it

A reasonable middle path: run Clarity for unlimited capture and add a standalone survey tool when you need the qualitative layer. That combination covers most of what Hotjar's paid plans offer, for less at the cost of the 30-day retention ceiling.

Where FunnelFreaks Fits

We do not sell either tool and we are not affiliated with either. What we do is the part that determines whether either one earns its place.

The most common thing we find in audits is not a missing behavioural tool. It is a behavioural tool installed eighteen months ago, generating thousands of recordings nobody watches, because the funnel data cannot tell anyone which recordings are worth watching.

So the work is usually upstream: validating that conversion events fire correctly, building the custom dimensions that make segmentation possible, and identifying where the funnel genuinely leaks. Once that exists, a free tool pointed at the right segment outperforms a paid tool pointed at everything.

If you are choosing between these two and your GA4 funnel cannot currently be segmented by device, source and payment method, the tool choice is not your constraint. Our pre-CRO data audit guide covers what to fix first.

The Short Version

Clarity for most brands. Hotjar if you need surveys in the same tool, retention beyond a month, or stronger privacy controls.

But the tool is the easy decision. Whether you can point it at the right page, for the right segment, on the right day that is the one worth solving.
