You know what price testing is. You know why it matters. Now comes the part most guides skip: how do you actually do it without making expensive mistakes?

Running a price test the wrong way is worse than not running one at all. You end up acting on data that does not mean what you think it means, and making changes that hurt your conversion rate while you congratulate yourself for being data-driven.

How Price Testing Is Actually Done

Step 1: Define Your Hypothesis Before Touching Anything

A hypothesis is not "let us try a lower price and see what happens." That is curiosity, not a test. A proper hypothesis looks like this:

"We believe that showing a crossed-out MRP of ₹1,999 next to our current price of ₹1,299 will increase checkout initiation rate on our product page because visitors currently have no reference point for the value they are getting."

Step 2: Choose What to Test (One Variable at a Time)

This is where discipline matters.

It is tempting to test a new price point AND add a crossed-out MRP AND change the discount display all at once. The logic seems sound: change more things, get a bigger lift. But this thinking destroys your ability to learn anything.

If you change three variables and your conversion rate goes up, you have no idea which change caused the improvement. If it goes down, you do not know what to undo. You end up richer by luck or poorer by confusion, and no smarter either way.

One variable per test. Always.

If you want to test your price point, test only the price point. If you want to test the discount display format, test only that. Run tests sequentially, not simultaneously, unless you are using a properly structured multivariate test with enough traffic to support it, which most D2C brands do not have.

Step 3: Set Up Your A/B Test Correctly

The technical setup of your test matters as much as the idea behind it.

Here is what correct setup looks like:

  • Traffic split: Visitors are randomly assigned to either the control (your current pricing) or the variant (your test version). This split should be 50/50 for most tests. Do not try to protect revenue by giving the variant only 10% of traffic, as this just means you will need 10 times longer to get a meaningful result.

  • Consistent experience: A visitor who sees the test price on day one should see the same price if they return on day three. Cookie-based assignment ensures this. If someone sees ₹999 on Monday and ₹1,199 on Wednesday, you have contaminated your data and potentially damaged trust.

  • Single page or single step: Run the test on the specific page where the pricing variable lives. If you are testing the product page price display, the test runs on the product page. If you are testing the checkout shipping cost structure, the test runs at checkout.

Step 4: Let It Run Long Enough to Be Statistically Valid

This is the step where most brands fail.

You launch a test. After three days, the variant is showing a 15% higher conversion rate. You stop the test and implement the change. This is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes in CRO.

Three days is not enough data. One week is almost never enough data. Conversion behavior fluctuates naturally based on day of week, time of day, and external factors like pay cycles, weekends, and marketing campaigns. A test that runs only on weekdays will miss weekend behavior entirely. A test that runs during a sale period will give you results that do not apply to normal conditions.

The rule is simple: run your test until you reach statistical significance, typically 95% confidence, AND until you have seen at least one to two full business cycles, usually two weeks minimum. For statistically significant results at a 2% baseline conversion rate, you need roughly 50,000 visitors per variant. Most smaller brands will need to accept directional results rather than statistically conclusive ones, and should be appropriately cautious about acting on them.

Do not stop a test early because it looks like it is winning. And do not stop it early because it looks like it is losing. Let the data finish the sentence.

Step 5: Read the Results Without Cherry-Picking

Your test is done. Now comes the moment where discipline is most important and most commonly abandoned.

Cherry-picking looks like this: the test shows a 4% lift in conversion rate but revenue per session is flat because the variant price was lower. You report the conversion rate lift and implement the change. You have just made your revenue worse while feeling good about your data.

Read all of your metrics together. The ones that matter most are:

  • Revenue per session: Did visitors in the test variant generate more or less revenue per session than the control? This accounts for both conversion rate and price point.

  • Checkout initiation rate: Did the price change affect whether people moved from the product page to checkout?

  • Purchase completion rate: Did it affect whether people who started checkout actually finished it?

A winning test is one where revenue per session improved at statistically meaningful confidence levels, not just where one metric moved in a direction you liked. If the data is ambiguous, the right answer is to run a cleaner test, not to decide based on the most favorable interpretation.

These three metrics tell three different stories, and you need all three to understand what your price test actually did.

Add-to-cart rate tells you whether the price affected initial interest and intent. A significant drop in ATC after a price increase tells you the new price created hesitation at the product page level.

This is the metric that settles debates.

Conversion rate alone is misleading in price tests because a lower price will almost always produce a higher conversion rate, but that does not mean you made more money. Revenue per session accounts for both: how many people bought AND how much they paid.

Ending the Test Too Early

Your variant is winning after five days. You end the test and implement. Three weeks later, conversion is back to baseline or worse.

What happened? You caught a random fluctuation, not a real signal. The test needed more time and more data to confirm what you thought you were seeing. Statistical significance is not optional. It is the difference between a real insight and an expensive coincidence.

What Good Pricing Test Results Actually Look Like

A good pricing test result is not always a dramatic win. Sometimes the most valuable outcome is learning that your current price is already optimised, or that the audience you thought was price-sensitive is actually trust-sensitive.
